EOS Rule #1: Form the possessive singular of nouns by adding s.

Sociology's mandate is far and wide:  Mausss idea of reciprocity, Durkheims idea organic solidarity, the cheerful robots of C. Wright Mills--of this and more sociology  is made.   Bitches stereotypes and the tablets of Moses can also be considered suitable subject matter for sociology.   Sociology has its work cut out for it because its everywhere.

EOS Rule #2: in a series of three or more terms with a single conjunction, use a comma after each term except the last.

Age, sex, and race are common cuts made by a sociologist.  Sociologists also study hierarchies of religion, power, and status.  But sociologists also do ethnographies. 

One sociology student entered the cafeteria for some ethnography.  She looked at the men at the table, sized them up, and sat down with her tray next to the kindest looking one.  He smiled, the middle one snorted, and the last one gazed at the television. 

If our three founding fathers were a law firm, they would be:  Marx, Durkheim, and Weber.

Sociology stretches from the macro to the micro; it contemplates social cause and effect; and it tries to keep values outeven as they rush back in.

EOS Rule #3:  enclose parenthetical comments between commas.

Sociology, though it is called a social science, rests heavily on the sociologist's emotional and political leanings.    Weber, the third of the three founding fathers, did not feel we ever could be objective -- in part because we study subjectivity.  Hence sociology ought, if it is to remain honest, to put its values up front so that the reader might use them as a guide through the facts and concepts sociology creates.

EOS Rule #4:  Place a comma before a conjunction introducing an independent clause. 

In sociology we try to be objective, but we realize this is an impossible goal.  Sociology is captured in and by emotions, values, and visions, but still we try to deliver facts as they emerge and not as they support our wishes.  Sociology, then, is a science, but it is a science of subjectivity.

EOS Rule #5: Do not join independent clauses by a comma.  

 The term sociology was first used in 1780; however, in 1838 the word was later used by Auguste Comte. Auguste Comte was a French thinker; he was one of the founders of sociology. He married Caroline Massin; unfortunately, he divorced in 1842. Comtes work was skeptically viewed; individuals perceived he named himself the Pope of Positivism. He died in 1857; he is buried at Cimetire du Pre Lachaise.

EOS Rule #6: Do not break sentences in two. 

Learning from different cultures, sociology gives us an opportunity to expand our mind. Because sociology is everywhere, we utilized it everyday. Utilizing sociology helps us learn from one another, in turn creating a better society.

EOS Rule #7: A participial phrase at the beginning of a sentence must refer to the grammatical subject. 

Upon arrival as a new student at CSULA, the woman found that sociology is a study of human social behavior. Without help from an advisor, she concluded that sociology is concerned with different types of groups. Becoming wiser to how sociology works, she realized human behavior is shaped by social factors.

Rule#8. Use a dash to set off an abrupt break or interruption and to announce a long appositive or summary.  "M-dash"

Sociology was the Rodriguezs major of choice for generations. Young Timothy did not want to follow in the same path. When Timothys father asked what major hed decided on shifting eyes and a nervous babble began

Rule #10. Use the proper case of pronoun. 
When Jessica and I started college, we had no idea what field we wanted to get into. We briefly had an interest in Psychology, Political Science, and even Engineering, but none of those choices seemed exciting until a counselor recommended Sociology, a field that focuses on social behaviors, attitudes and actions. We immediately started taking Sociology classes and began understanding how humans shape society and are the cause of corruption.    

Gender and race are abstractions, yet they are powerful, concrete influences in everyones lives.

My younger sister is more studious than I; she reads more than I do and receives better grades too. My mother brags about her to the entire family.

2. Many adults feel culturally disconnected from children and teens because entertainment, such as music and movies, is profoundly unlike it was when they were growing up. 
Karl Marx was considered the father of conflict theory.  Marx looked for what tore society apart.  He analyzed large systems of capitalism and communism.

Rule# 12- Use definite, specific, concrete language
The typical idea of fun for most American children in todays society consists of chatting online, searching music videos on Youtube, and playing video games rather than reading, bike riding, or drawing.

Theory is a set of interrelated ideas that explains how the world works, human behavior, and social events.  There are macro and micro theories.  Grand theory attempts to answer all questions about the world.

Rule#13- Omit needless words. Write some Sociology with some typical needless words and then cross them out.

Rule # 13  more . . .
We are in a financial crisis.  Unaware of the long term effects, people spend less money.  Dining out is a rarity but make-up is a must.     

In society today, we can sometimes feel the need to conform out there to the expectations and we also can feel the need to express ourselves.  We conform, rebel, and create.

To understand any given phenomena, you must look at empirical aspects of history, find out what the motivations were at the time, as well as link empirical aspects to conceptual tools that can help us create generalization of the world.

#14 Use the active voice  

A sociologist will study hierarchies within society. vs. Sociologists study social hierarchies.

Sociology can be found everywhere. vs. Sociology is everywhere.

#15 Put statements in positive form

Often sociology is not well understood by those who have not studied it. vs. Sociology is often misunderstood.

Sociology does not think that stereotypes are insignificant. vs. In sociology, stereotypes are significant.

#16 Use definite, specific, concrete language.

It is generally understood that sociology makes a study of societal norms, among other social aspects. vs. Sociology includes the study of social norms.

Although sociology is not my foremost field of interest, it is related to my primary area of study. vs. I am an anthropology student.

Max Weber argued that bureaucracies profoundly affected social relationships.
EOS Rule #18: Avoid a succession of loose sentences.

Aristotle and Confucius were less concerned with explaining social dynamics than with prescribing a perfected, moral social world.
